The Spectacular Year-end Trip

The first and second graders' yearlong project involved a study of the five elements and was entitled "Journey to the Source." Numerous one-day trips took place during the year to such sites as the Long Pond Iron Works in New Jersey and the Roebling Bridge in the Upper Delaware Scenic River Corridor. The students kept individual portfolio notebooks of all their studies. The finale for this enrichment work was a three day trip to Salem and Gloucester, Massachusetts, in May with an itinerary including the Saugus Iron Works, The House of the Seven Gables, the Peabody Essex Museum, and a whale watch on Stellwagen Bank 15 miles out in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Ann. In the evening the children swam in an indoor pool back at the motel.
